Zimbabwe Gender Commission Africa Day Statement

Zimbabwe Gender Commission Commemorates Africa Day Celebrating Diversity and Ubuntu

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission joins the continent in celebrating Africa Day, a day that honours the rich diversity and heritage of Africa. As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we are reminded of the profound values embodied by the concept of ubuntu, which lies at the heart of African culture.

Ubuntu, a philosophy deeply rooted in African traditions, underscores the interconnectedness of humanity and emphasizes the importance of compassion, empathy, and mutual respect. It is a guiding principle that transcends borders, ethnicities, and genders, reminding us of our shared humanity and our collective responsibility towards one another.

At the core of ubuntu lies the principle of gender equality and non-discrimination which resonates with our Constitution. The Zimbabwe Gender Commission reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of all people, ensuring that every individual, regardless of gender, enjoys equal opportunities, freedoms, and dignity.

As we commemorate Africa Day, we recognize the strides made towards gender equality on the continent, yet we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. The Zimbabwe Gender Commission remains steadfast in its mission to ensure constitutionalism, to profile the need to address gender disparities, eliminate discrimination, and advance gender justice for all. In response to the scourge of sexual harassment in workplaces, ZGC urges public and private institutions to be unambiguous in their efforts to rid the country of this scourge.

Through collaborative efforts, dialogue, and advocacy, we strive to build a society where the principles of ubuntu thrive, and where every person is empowered to realize their full potential, irrespective of gender. Together, let us celebrate our diversity, embrace our shared humanity, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable Africa starting in our country.
